The Importance of File Notes

Always prepare a file note stating the date, the fee earner, what work was done, and how long it took. The note can be typed or handwritten, provided the handwriting is legible. When assessing the Bill, the Costs Officer will often look for a file note and, if they cannot find one, or if they cannot read it, they may disallow the time claimed. Time spent preparing file notes can usually be included in the Bill.
